Interviews with three participants of the women exercise group at PRCS Safad Hospital in Beddawi camp August 2011
The women exercise group was initiated in 2005 in the frame of the rehabilitation project of PRCS supported since 1993 by PGS. During several years of offering physiotherapy service, the team felt the need to better address the need for the large number of women that came to seek help for osteo-muscular problems and chronic pain syndromes. The team at Safad Rehabilitation clinic decided to start a pilot project of providing group exercises to women, with a focus on long-term prevention. In the Palestinian community women work a lot in their houses, cleaning, cooking, shopping and taking care of their children and their elderly, and they often have problems of neck, back and knee pain. The phenomenon that women go to clubs or gyms to do exercise and sports is not yet very accepted in the refugee camps, but when the physiotherapists at Safad Hospital started to offer this activity to the patients who finished their treatment at clinic, they liked the idea to join the training three times per a week. Moreover, their families accepted the idea as well, mainly due to that the training is leaded by female professionals and take place within the premises of Safad hospital.
The team organizes groups of 10 women who train 3 times per week for 6 months. In addition to the physical exercises, the women also receives information about anatomy, causes of neck and back pain, how to make prevention from pain by using their bodies in correct position and inform about good nutrition.
Each woman that takes part of the exercise is evaluated individually, and the overall results are very positive. The women really find that the groups help them to prevent pain, they become more active and they feel happier. They often mention that the activity also provides them with new friendship and that they have the chance to exchange many ideas and problems during this group, so, it ends up being as well an important social activity.
Siham Abu Dabous, the project manager of the PGS supported project with PRCS and also the leader of the women exercise group, made interviews with three of the participants.
